Hi, i have a tank that has been running for about 5 years. I have always had quite a few fish in it and it has been fine. When i discovered ##150### i put in this tank and it said that i REALLY needed more filtration and that it was 149% overstocked. Should i be watching what im putting in the tank or just carry on what im doing? Right now, with all my tanks, i add fish, watch how the tank copes and if its fine i leave them there. After a few months if all is going well i add some more. Thanks

is this one of the tanks in your sig? the site you used needs to be taken with a pinch of salt but can give inexperienced keepers a rough idea of their stocking,

to hazard a guess was it the 100L that came up with those results?

yes it was the 100L that i was talking about. i will update my sig as there are more fish in it now.

get rid of the fantails. not only do goldfish produce a lot of waste, personally i dont think they shoiuld be in a heated tank anyway. they're coldwater fish.

its not a very hot tank, its temperate, about 69F. I really dont want to get rid of them as im quite attached, ive had them for 4 years and i wouldnt be able to trust anyone i gave them too that they would keep the tank clean.

I agree.
These websites that calculate your stocking levels should be used as a guide only.

I have used 2 different sites, and put my info in. One told me I was way overstocked. And the other one said I could add more fish!!!

But the fundamental problem for me, that they don't always take into account what fish are actually going to go into the tank. So for eg, you have a 100 liter tank and it tells you that you can have 100cm of fish say. Now you put in catfish only up to a 100cm. And the website says that's fine. But it might not be. There are too many bottom dwellers even though you are "ok" within the parameters.

The correct thing to do would be to get another tank (which is not an option like you said) or re-home the coldwater fish.
They shouldn't be kept along with tropicals and I find it cruel to have them in higher temperatures.

yes it is now

100 liter-2 fantails,3 leopard danios,2 zebra danios,1 guppy,1 platy,1 weather loach and chinese algae eater.

With the above i would move the platy and guppy to the 80L, at the present temperature these will be subject to disease and have a much weaker immune system so will be better suited to the 80L,

Chinese algae eaters are known for sucking on the slime that coats goldfish leaving them susceptible to disease, they also get extremely aggressive as they age, and ultimately aren't a small fish once they mature, Therefore personally I would rehome this fish as and when you have the opportunity,

The weather loach will also get to be a big fish and may need rehoming at a later date if it does get too big,

Thus leaving you with 2 fantails, 5 Danios and temporarily at least 1 weather loach, which provided you do weekly water changes of 30-50% should be manageable

and while its still not perfect, is still a great deal better than the conditions most goldfish are subject too,

yes thank you, i will do this. also what you were saying about goldfish, i was at my mums friends house today and they have 2 large goldfish and a fantail in a 60L biorb!!! the fantail has swimbladder but they dont even notice theres anythign wron with it. i really do feel sorry for the poor things
