What impact do shrimp have on stocking levels?

Everyone quotes the 1 inch / US Gallon general rule for FISH, but how does this apply to Shrimp, espcially Japonica / Takashi Amano Shrimp?

TIA,

Andy

They do affect the bio-load. They are after all living organisms. Nevertheless, they are so delicate and light that they do not pollute the water nearly as much as fish, and therefore, as long as you don't put silly amounts in, they don't overstock your tank. I normally stock my tank without shrimp as normal, and then add 2 or 3 depending on tank size, not worrying about their pollution levels.

Thank you for your responses so far, but let me put it another way...

I have a 68L tank that is fully stocked with fish.

How many Japonicas could I sensibly put in there for my cleanup crew?

TIA,

Andy

Because shrimp are scavengers, do they compete with corys for available food in the gravel, or is this a concern? I'm figuring a shrimp will eat just about anything on the gravel (do they eat poop?) or wherever else, but also know corys like to pluck leftovers from gravel as well. Of course they're fasyter than a shrimp, so they may beat them to the food anyway. :grr:

Wow, great little web site that! Thanks.

Reading between the lines, it wouild appear that your average shrimp places 25% of the bioload of that of a fish, inch for inch.
