G'day All,

I've got a 46g tropical tank which has been stocked for just over 3 weeks. I have done one 30% water change during this time. Are the following levels looking ok? The fish are all healthy.

pH: 7.0, Ammonia: 0ppm, Nitrite 1.6pp & Nitrate: 0.9ppm

Also I just wanted to know peoples opinions about whether I have over stocked this tank. If I have overstocked any suggestions?

2 Silver Sharks, 4 Angels, 2 Bronze Catfish, 2 Golden Gouramis and 2 Irian Rainbows. I was told by the guy where the tank/fish were purchased that the sharks will outgrow this tank but he is happy to buy them back when this happens.

Thanx

Chip

hi,

I am kind of new as well, but what from what i have learned your nitrite is high, and you should do some more frequent water changes to reduce it. if you take a test before and after you will see how much it helps. also i dont think you have to many fish, but i dont know if your fish are compatible. most people say that an inch a fish is 1 gallon, or sometimes 2inch fish 1 gallon.....so i think your ok!

im not 100% sure on your stocking but as said 1inch per fish per gallon.

however im sure when you use this calculation you have to take the size of the fully grown fish to work it out
but this calculation is only good for smaller fish such as neon tetra and simular sized fish.

did you cycle the tank at all?

I was advised at the aquarium to cycle with fish in the tank.....I had the water in for a week before adding the fish

 you should be doing a fishless cycle.

I know this may sound a bit :grr: but maybe hold the thought of adding fish for a while, just until you can get your levels corrected (if there not how they should be, otherwise you could be poisoning your fish)... but if their fine, still wait for a while lol.

You'll have fun with fish... hope this helps :fun:

Others should give you some good info. They are great when it comes to this stuff :)

Ok lets clear this up in points:

1) Nitrite is WAY too high, you should be doing multiple larg water changes each day to keep it at 0.25 MAX.

2) AS your aware, the sharks will outgrow that tank, Bala's get pritty big!

3) Cories need to be in groups of atleast 4, the more the merrier :)

4) The active sharks may well stress out the chilled angels, this is especially a problem when cycling because the poor water stats + stress equal higher chance of illness. Reduce the stress by ensuring theres plenty of cover in the tank :)

5) Good luck, check your stats twice daily and water change as soon as ammonia/nitrite go above 0/.25 :)

6) Dont give up!
