I have a 90 gallon cycled tank that will soon be the home of 3 small angels and 1 pleco. I am looking for ideas on compatible tank mates for them. Maybe a school (9-10) of brightly coloured smallish (1-2”) fish would work? Or more angels? Or some kind of centrepiece fish? Also this move leaves my 15 tall empty. For it, I like the idea of tiger barbs and cories but with the tigers being fin nippers I’m not sure if it would fly. What about an algae eater for the 15?

If you want a school of brightly coloured, small fish. Neon or cardinal tetras are probably the way to go. :)

Get 10 corys for your 90gal :D.

And a bristlenose plec, Also a male betta :D, you could get say 4 females to go with it if you dont mind possible babies.

Wouldn't neon's and cardinal's be small enough to be dinner for the angels?

Fair enough.......but you did say small angels. I have never personally kept either neons!!

Ok so no neons. But what would be a hardy, unaggressive, smallish, schooling fish to add with angels? I think I'd like a large school of about 9-13.

Harlequin Rasboras maybe? They're nice red and black  They also like the softer water that the angels like.

Neons are the normal diet of angels in the wild which is why they're not recommended. If you get small angels and large neons, then you may be OK, but when the angels grow, they could decide to take on the neons anyway. Some people can keep the 2 together without incident, but most can't.

Another thought - the Cherry Barb is a readily available little fish that's not aggressive...

Why not try some other type of tetra. Not sure about cardinals, they might work as they are slightly larger than neons.

Why not some dwarf cichlids. Some rams would be nice in there.

How about corys and ruby barbs. The male ruby barbs turn deep red when after a female, they are great to watch and they don't nip like tigers.

rummynose tetras are nice - a bit delicate, but pretty, and their noses go pale in bad water quality...bless. :D
