Hi,

I have a new 63 gallon tank but finding it hard to plan my stock list.

I would like a big fish like a Severum but not sure what i can have with it.

Here is my list so far.

1 Severum
6 Corydoras

3 Red Rainbowfish
3 Bosemans Rainbow fish

1 Plec
1 Rainbow Shark
1 Angel Fish

Would the above all be ok together? Also if i have room for more what else could i put together with the Severum.
Interested in a Blue Acara.

Thanks

Hi welcome to the forum! First things first what do you know about cycling a tank?

With the fish you listed there are a few issues.

First one severums, the common severums like Gold, Green and Super Red are strains of a species called Heros Efasctisious and get too big for a 240 liter tank as they get to about 12 inches or bigger. However there are some rarer strains that are possible to put in your tank, I have the same tank and I have a true Heros Severus sp.Orrinoco but you could also consider Heros sp. Rotkiels as these only get to 6/7 inches sometimes 8 but you would have to be thourough in your identification of the fish you buy before you get it otherwise you could end up with one of the big ones and be in a situation of rehoming or upgrading in less than a year as they get to adult size.

The cories will be fine but I would have 12 of one species as you will get the best behaviour out of them and the most chance of breeding as well.

The rainbows you mentioned, Bosmani would be okay but reds get too big. Its also best to have at least 6 of one species of rainbow fish as they are shoaling fish and would be stressed in lesser numbers. In my 240 I have 6 turquoise rainbows at the moment but I am going to swap them for 8 Dwarf Neon rainbows because they stay smaller and pack as much colour in quite easily.

The plec - common plecs get to about 18 inches which is going to be too big for your tank and take up like a 3rd of your stocking options however there are lots of smaller plecs available in the hobby now most common ones are bristlenoses but there are over 600 species of plec now and there are 100s that are suitable for your tank with all kinds of markings, some are black with big white spots some are gold with black spots others are black with electric yellow squiggles some are bright blue others are lime green.

Rainbow shark should be fine :) as would angels

Based on that I would alter your stocking to something like

1 Heros sp.Rotkiel
2 Angelfish
1 Blue Acara
12 Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish
1 Rainbow Shark
12 Panda Corydoras
1 L201 Inspector plec

Wills :)
