Hello

Currently been fishless cycling for a 250ltr tank for my 2 calico fantails - recently decided to buy another tank for the fantails and keep the 250lr tank for a tropical set up once cycled - the calico fantails are currently ok in the smaller tank I have set up.

Could anyone advise me how many fish I could keep in the 250ltr/55g tank? - interested in peaceful community set up - would like a shoel of neon tetras or something like that

Any recommendations would be great

Thanks
Jack1

In a nice sized tank like that, the world, my friend, is pretty much your oyster.

The problem is that if you ask 10 of us that question, you'll get 10 different answers. And you might not like the things we might suggest.

If it were my tank, I would probably go for 3 different shoaling species with 8-10 of each species, depending upon their size, plus some bottom feeders, plus a centre-piece group.

What I'd suggest is that you have a wander around a number of your local fish shops at the weekend (and let's face it, we all look for any excuse to do that!), write down the names of the species that you like the look of (common and scientific names would be good, if you can), post them up, and you'll get loads of advice on how many of each would work for you.

HTH.

^^^ that + if it was my tank id have as many neons as i could in a heavily planted tank with a few large-ish shrimp and some otos

Thanks to both of you for advice - think I'll visit LFS and have a look around - will post update

Cheers

Been thinking about fish for the bottom of the tank - really like the False Julii Cory and the Kuhli Loach

Would both be to much for the bottom of the tank?

Cheers

You could have 6 of each and they'd be okay in a tank size like that. But there's only so much room for bottom fish xD

What are the measurements of the tank in regard to height, length and width? Kuhli's would need plenty of hiding spaces as they are a nocturnal fish, though if they feel secure enough and they are in a large enough group you should see them in the day.

Really, thats great, was thinking of 4 cory and 3 coolies but that sounds good

Also thinking about 10-15 neon tetras

I do also like Dwarf Gourami but read about their territorial streak - not sure about them yet?

Cheers

What are the measure of the tank in regard to height, length and width?

40" x 18.8" x 29"

Cory's should be in a group of 6 at least and with Kuhli's they should pretty much have as many as you can cram in there otherwise you will never see them. One thing I now feel inclined to mention whenever somebody brings up Cory's is the fact they need plenty of meat (or meat-based food) in their diet, for some reason many people assume they just eat algae.

Those numbers of Neon Tetras sound good, you could go even higher depending on what other stock you want.

Dwarf Gourami's can be very territorial and if you got them you should only ever have one male. There can also be aggressive to long-finned, slow or colourful fish so including them would limit potential stocking.

Your fish shop is not going to stock everything so in the meantime there are a good few websites with pages about many different tropical fish, I find that they are a great place to browse and see if anything catches your eye. Nothing compares to seeing the fish with your own eyes though.

Your measurements are pretty average for a tank of that size, that is a good thing. To give you an idea one of my tanks has a length of 101cm and a width of 41cm, I have 6 Bronze Cory's (pretty chunky), I would have had a group of 6(ish) Kuhli Loaches if they did not disappear and 1 Common Whiptail so as you can see, you could probably add another kind of bottom dweller (depending what it is of course) if you wanted to.

Thanks very much for your advice - think I'll go for 6 cory and 6 Kuhli - might also up the neons to 20 - just need to think about other fish to add but checking out websites and do some research too

Appreciate you taking the time to advise - going to LFS this weekend to have a look about

Thanks :)

Definately got 6 Julii Corys on my stock list

Looking forward to it :)

Hello

Decided to not get cories - as much as I love them - currently got gravel set up and not wanting to upset things too much before the end of my cycle on my 250ltr tank. Maybe do sand set up once I'm more experienced in fishkeeping

So far I've only got this on my list

20 x Neon Tetras
10 x Harlequins

Any more suggestions on what i can get?
cheers
