Hi :)

I have a 100 * 40 * 40 cm 160 l tank which has been cycled and so far I have started out with 5 guppies.
I thought I got 5 males but one of them is female so now I have about 10 rapidly growing fry as well :(

I didnt really want a tank full of guppies so I am going to see if one of the local fish shops will have them!

Also a few days ago I bought 3 spotted corydoras and I am going back to the same shop tomorrow to get 3 more. I really like them they are attractive and fun active fish. The 3 I already have mostly stick together so three more will look great and I am sure they will be happier!

So what I had in mind was some small attractive schooling fish like neons and similar. But i am not sure how many to get. Would three schools of say 10 fish in each be too many ? And which fish would you reccomend?

For the size of your tank I would recommend some Congo tetra, they are slightly larger then the neons and guppies but still look really nice husky swimming in groups. I would say get in the region of 6-8 of these as they love to swim together. The colours are fantastic if fed a high quality tropical flake :)

Firstly, I would have to disagree with previous poster's suggestion of Congo Tetra. They are best kept in a shoal of 6 or so and as they grow to between 2.5" - 3" and need open water your tank is unsuitable.

Getting 3 more Cory of the same species as you already have is a great idea as Cory tend to stick to their own type and find security id a group of 6 or more.

I advise you to re-home the single female Guppy before she is harassed till death by the 4 males. Also the fry too as soon as they are sizable otherwise you will end up with 'Guppy Soup'!

My suggestion would be a shoal of 6 Harlequin Rasboras. Lovely temperament and interesting to watch, especially when feeding.

'Guppy Soup'!
Made me LOL :D , yes I think that I will rehome all the guppys tbh

They look like great fish B-)

So if I had the x6 corys and x6 harlequin, How much room would I have for other fish? I dont want to overstock, and I would prefer small fish

I agree, Congo Tetras become really chunky fish as adults, was rather shocked to see a stocky ~10cm specimen at SeaLife(?) in Southsea last autumn.

How about building up the Corydoras and a nice schooling fish like Harlequins to 12 each, buying them in groups of 4-6 every couple of weeks or so, so as to not overload your filter bacteria too quickly? Bigger species groups for what are very social fish that travel together in the hundreds and thousands in the wild not only looks great, but enbles the fish you have to have a more natural settings, rather than grabbing groups of six of all sorts of species.
