Stocking A Species Tank?

A colony of Tropheus! Like these Kirizas:

You know, I would go for a species tank of Tiger barbs. They're active, and the male in breeding color is one of the prettiest fish I've ever seen. Not the green or albino variety, just good, old-fashioned old-school tiger barbs. I loved these fish when I had them and kind of miss them really. I wish I had a 40g to devote to a nice school. These fish are never given their due and they're almost never kept in ideal circumstances. They are like the "black sheep" of the small fish world, too nippy for most communities. Either that, or a school of pearl danios, that would be soooo pretty, especially with the right lights and planting.

You have a great number of choices with that tank if you want to go with a species tank. Maybe you could narrow it down and help you get better suggestions if you told us more about what you might be interested in.

Are you looking to "fill" the tank with a larger grouping of fish, or would you be more interested in a pair or trio off slightly larger fish? Are you interested in possibly trying to spawn a species in this tank? Would you prefer a freshwater set up or would you also be open to the idea of a brackish water set up? Do you like colorful fish or fish with fancy finnage? Would you prefer active fish that move about a great deal, or maybe you'd prefer fish that just sort of chill out and hang around?

Maybe a biotype with, maybe, one top/mid dwelling species and one bottom dwelling species? Perhaps pick the bottom dweller you like (loaches are good choices) and then pick a top/mid dweller from the same area. A river tank with hillstream loaches and whatever schooling fish come from that habitat would make a great tank.
