You are in good hands with fluttermoth and eagle and the other members here and this kind of interaction and learning can save you years of trial and error if you've not had that much chance to do tanks before.
As mentioned, you might want to learn about the kits that can measure water hardness in various ways, thus giving you an idea of which species would likely thrive in your area's particular water. Learning how to "cycle" a tank is also a top priority before actually getting fish and many beginners have not really had a fair chance to understand this aspect initially.
