Hi everybody,

I'm constructing an approx 3 gal tank (will be more rather than less, if it isn't 3) and don't know what to stock. At the moment i'm thinking I could get a female Betta, or maybe African dwarf frogs, or some kind of tiny fish such as ember tetra. I wouldn't be adverse to inverts like shrimp either. I just have never had such a small tank, so don't know what to do with it!

It will be heated, filtered, and lit.

Thanks for reading!

reall you are very limited by two factors, size and stability.

OK It's pretty obvious that you can't put a 10" oscar in a tank that size, you do have a few options though, betta is the obvious one, a shrimp tank is another, or you could go with something like a trio of endlers. The more tricky thing for a tank that size is keeping parameters stable, it's do-able but it's never going to be easy, you basically have no margin for error, if you miss a water change or very slightly overfeed the water levels could very quickly go haywire and before you know it the whole systems crashed and everythings dead. Don't mean to sound alarmist but just to be sure you know what you are getting in to. You just have to make sure you are super conscientious with maintenance and such like so that you don't make any slip up's.

Hmm, dwarf puffer. That's an interesting one, hadn't thought about them

I wouldn't put a dp in there personally. They are kinda messy fish and eat meaty foods, which would spoil the water rather quickly.

- They are messy fish. Regardless of their size, they produce a lot of waste. This can make life difficult if you are keeping them in a small tank, because in order to keep the water in good condition (which is crucial with all puffers species) , you will need to have strong filtration, and perform frequent water changes.

Read the link...it's attached to a page in Oddball section that's devoted to dp's :good:

Well, i'm gonna go with a female betta. Anyone know of a good place in the UK to get a small heater?
