Hi,

I am new to keeping fish. In the last month, I have gotten a 10 gallon and then a 29 gallon tank. I have the 10 gallon tank going with 8 small fish in total. I had previously used a filter for 50 gallon tank on the 10 gallon tank. I have since moved that filter to my new 29 gallon tank. I would say that there was about 10 days worth of "bacteria" growing from the 10 gallon tank. I have started the 29 gallon tank for 2 days now with that particular filter. My question is how long should I wait before putting starter fish in the 29 gallon tank? I had waited only 2 days for the 10 gallon tank, as suggested by the pet shop. Also, I started the 10 gallon tank with 3 bloodfin tetras with one cory catfish. With the new 29 gallon tank, how many starter fish should I start with? Still, 4? I ultimately hope to keep one or two angel fish, do you guys think the bleeding heart tetras would be compatible tank mates for the angel fish? Thank you for any advice that you can give me.

Hi jholtz,

Personally I'd be worried that bleeding hearts would nip the angels too much.

You are in what we call a "Fish-In Cycling Situation" with your tanks. You need to verify that you know good water changing technique and you need to pick up a good liquid-reagent-based test kit if you haven't already got one. You need to study the articles in our Beginners Resource Center starting with the fish-in cycling article and including ones about the nitrogen cycle and tank start-up. Come back here with your questions and the members will help you. Read other peoples threads too as that's a fun way to pick up things.
