Ok so I currently have a dovii at around 6 inch and a Texas at 5-6 inches..

now i know i don't have many options on what fish to add (if any due to the potential size and aggression of the dovii) so what iv decided to do is keep the texas and take the dovii back and add a green terror, jack Dempsey and 1 or 2 (or how ever many recommended) convicts instead. All fish will be small (2-5inches)

Would this be ok? Tank is a rio 400 (151x51x66cm - 450 litres) with fluval fx5 filter, sand, bit of bogwood and couple of rocks. May add a powerhead at a later date too...

Thanks

You'll want all of them the same size as the texas, not at 2 inches. Meaning you'll somehow need to obtain adult convicts if you so choose them.

Aside from that, I don't see why not. As long as the dovii gets a new home.

Just watch carefully, I'm assuming you've had the texas for a while, he probably won't take kindly to the newcomers. And ime young GT's and JD's are kinda wussy.

Sounds like it could work, have a back up plan for the victim/culprit fish if it doesn't, you could add some dithers, maybe SD's and other non-cichlids to the mix.

Defo would take the Dovii back.

The Texas is new, only been in the tank a couple of days. My lfs has all the fish I want and all are near enough the same size as the Texas. I just didn't want to get them without asking about them on here 1st.

The same lfs has already said they will take the dovii off me. How many convicts would you advise?

What other cichlids of similar size to a GT and JD would you recommend if i wasn't to get them?

Hi, yes the dovii will be going back. SD's? Sorry but what do you mean by that? And what other non-cichlids were you thinking?

SD’s Silver Dollars, do better in groups, but get quite large in size also and used to beat my cichlids to food so will need to keep in mind their biomass. Could research larger barbs also.

Other non-cichlids, maybe a senegal bichir, plecs, there are other possibilities but these come to mind.

*Just seen ur signature and you already have a bichir :)

SD's are Silver Dollars. They get very round and pretty big, and make great dithers/target fish for large cichlids as long as the tank isn't planted.

In regards to the convicts, I myself would only get one. Make sure it's a male, as females only max at like 4 inches.

Other fish I think could work (though these are suggestions, I don't know texas cichlids at all) are salvini cichlids (be careful, they're mini monsters) firemouths, nicaraguans (I think, they're a little laid back, but can stick up for themselves from what I've researched) that's what comes to mind, probably plenty others out there.

Ah right, I'm not a lover of silver dollars tbh. I think they are too plain... If that makes sense. I would rather some sort of barb... But which sort would I be ok with? Not sure if iv seen any salvinis but will have a look. As for the convict il stick to 1 and ask for a male. Thanks

Do not put silver dollars in with texas cichlids the dollars will be attacked. I had 2 rescue dollars in with my texas took him about 30 seconds to start ripping into them. Your best bet is to get slightly smaller fish than the texas, let it still be the boss of the tank. JD is fine, I have a JD in with my texas, although they mouth at each other thats as far as it goes. True parrots mix well they are fast growing and wont take any nonsense from the texas. The main thing I have found with keeping texans is if you have a male, they will become VERY agressive if there is a female in the tank, it makes no difference what the species is that is where any trouble will start, trust me been there and done it. I would also do away with thoughts of "dithers" this will also drive the texas nuts and make it agressive, they dont like a lot of movement around them.

My texas doesn't to a lot of moving itself lol won't look twice at my dovii but when the dovii goes he/she will be boss of the tank :) going by what you've said it may be an idea not to add the dithers as i don't want any aggression that can otherwise be prevented
