My new betta is in a new 40 litre tank. I filled it up on Saturday, took some mature filter media and popped that into the filter. I also stole Baby's plant, and added a tree stunp cave type plastic thing. Neptune is in there with a cory, both were bought at the weekend. I also added some water lettuce. No heater yet, it is on its way to me after buying online. But the temp is staying a steady 78-80 cos of the warm weather.
There is a plastic condensation tray, and I bought a light and fitted it to the lid. It gets warm when it is on - only warm, not hot! I kept lifting the lid at first to make sure the condensation tray was not getting hot, and it seems OK - warm, but OK. I noticed an odd smell and presumed it was cos of the tray warming. Today I lifted the lid to check the water parameters and it SMELLS. like the smell I noticed, but worse when the lid is full off! It smells kinda stagnant pond like :S I straight away did a 25% water change. Water stats are fine, no ammo or nitrite. Water feels a little slimy to the touch too. I took out the plant and noticed that smelt bad, but I usually keep the plant weight and plastic stuff they wrap around it on the plant, so i have removed this and rinsed the roots of the plant, then replanted it. I also had some pieces of almond leaf in there, and they smelt odd when I took them out, but I think they just took on the smell of the water.
What could it be making this smell? plant was in Baby's tank for at least a month and there was never a smell there. Some of the same batch of water lettuce is in baby's tank, and again no probs there. Could it be the almond leaf?? i have removed it anyway. Can't think what else it could be..... only 'new thing' is the gravel, and I rinsed that well, and it never smelt of anything!
Oh yeah, also there was a little froth at the water level, but this COULD be the bubbles that Neptune had been blowing - would they feel slimy??
HELP! Both fish seem fine but the smell is gross!

The slimy feel of the water, combined with new tank, and lighting, makes me think it's probably algae and/or fungus. Keep on top of the water changes. What size is the tank, what's the stocking, and what light do you have over it?

40 litre, 1 betta and 1 cory, dunno about the light cos I threw the packaging away but it is small! lol do you mean what wattage? It might say on the bulb. I only have the light on for about 4 hours, the rest of the time there is light filtering through closed curtains....

Hiya
Is the indian almond leaf new, or did you take it from another tank? Its just after a couple of weeks the AIL can go bad.

yeah tibby remember i told u they only last for a few weeks then u have to throw it away :)

I know about cories NOW... lol. I am gonna move him to my community with some others soon.
Indian almond leaf is part of one that Phoe sent me, but it had never been in water... I was saving it and then forgot it was there! Could it be that?

What I was trying to ascertain is the type (filament, compact fluorescent, halogen etc) and the wattage really. What type of cory is the one you have?

It's in a big tub of tap water on a windowsill :)
Will do daily water changes for a few days to try to get rid of the stink!
