My stinray I have had for a month, I did not expect it to live as it was in bad shape when I got it but this morning I woke up to feed him and when he came up against the glass with his belly it looks like little flaps of skin are peeling back around his legs and its red (rashy) or kind of bloody under neith the skin that has peeled up. He is eating fine and other then that looks normal swimming around like usual but I dont understand what this could have been caused from. I put parasite medicine in the water this morning as well to hopefully help the case. Also the tank has a sandy bottom.

all my water levels are reading fine:

ammonia: 0
ph: 7.6
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 40

How many gallons is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
Bleeding bemeath the skin is septicemia, rashes can be septicemia.
Peeling skin can be parasites, bad water quality, bacterial.
Is he trying to rub himself on things in the tank.
Septicemia hard to cure once it advances as its blood poisoning.

Don't they need massive tanks.

Have you tryed posting this thread in the right part of the forum.

stop treating the fish immediately and do a 50% water change & gravel clean. Then do another 50% water change each day for at least the next week. Stingrays get red/ pink skin when the water is not good. Your nitrate levels are too high and are killing it. You have to keep the water perfect for them and keep the nitrates below 20ppm.

Just going to pm you colin about this thread.
Asked hubby what time it would be in australia.

Ok I think I found out the problem watching him closely the last couple days. The sores are healing now but one of the other fish i caught pecking at the stingrays belly when the stingray was sunbathing at the surface. I have not isolated the fish from the tank yet as it doesn't seem to be doing it anymore after the stingray snapped at it. I am going to watch closely today and if I see anything I am going to isolate the fish right away so it doesn't cause anymore damage to the stingray.

Is there anyway to speed up the healing? there is two little sores about dime sized one a little more sore then the other it looks like.

Thank you everyone.

* also it was a tricho leeri taking nibbles at the ray.. guy at pet store said they are non aggressive and wont harm the ray

rays have a very robust immune system, but are very sensitive to water quality and most common medications, so be very careful before treating.

what is your substrate?

Substrate is fine sand.. as I heard rays can cut themselves if it is anything other. The plecos dont mind the ray and seem to stay away from it its god damn gandolf that keeps harrassing the ray! he is looking very happy and healthy today besides the sores eating lots and swimming lots like usual.

Thanks,

sand will be fine, as is fine gravel

keep nitrate to 20mg or less & feed feed feed
