quick update.......
tank is finally cycling again. The ammonia is finally gone and nitrites are at about 2ppm. Nitrates around 20. The Ph had jumped to neutral(after i used the Kh+ stuff i bought) but has since dropped back to around 6.6. I have a feeling it will keep dropping, so that has to be avoided. I received the Kent stable product, which i was told was the best one on the market for raising the KH. I started using it last night. I'm going to make a better effort tonight (it says to dose every hour until the desired hardness is achieved)
If i can get the buffering capacity up, i feel i can maintain a Ph of 6.6-6.8, which is right about where i want it. The tank looks like hell right now due to the cycle (lots of brown algae on my new plants) but it should subside soon. All fish are still alive and look fine. So, things are looking up. Appreciate all the help from everyone in this thread. Moral of the story is that beneficial bacteria DO NOT grow in sub 6 PH. In fact, they die, quickly. My tank is living proof.
