Hey guys, im lookin for ideas on any Sth East Asia bottum dwelers? APART from kuhlis, as i fear as my eel grows larger they could become dinner... :( eek

So any ideas?

Any of the smaller Botia species would work.

Thnx CFC, but ive already had clowns. Too small a tank though. I was lookin for something a little oddball-ish too.

Small freshwater gobies could work but you would have to research whatever you choose carefully as many species are brackish fish and some grow very large and predatory.
Asian catfishes are a really dangerous area unless you can identify exact species and know what you are looking for, most commonly available Asian catfish grow large, are very aggressive and will eat anything they can fit into their mouths.

What species of eel do you have?

How about Asian bumblebee cats? Leiocassius siamensis I think. They're a fish I've always been interested in keeping and grow to about 6 inches....

Cheers
Andy

Just a Peacock Spiny Eel CFC

Ill check them out NewBoy, but im turning towards Cories after what CFC said, and other bits and pieces ive found.

Now renamed as Pseudomystus siamensis the Asian bumble bee cat can be kept with larger fish that are able to look after themselves, anything under 4 inches is likely to be eaten. They also have a reputation for being highly territorial (so only one per tank) and will chase and nip the fins of other fish that stray into their territory so a large tank which allows other fish to flee and escape is a must, if placing one in a community tank i wouldnt go with anything less than a 4x2x2'.

corys, even though not SE asian, would do best actually, some of myfriends call them asian fish because of their barbels (whiskers) so it would look cool anyway

So should i call angel fish Asian fish because their modified ventril fins make them look like Gouramis then?

Asian fish come from Asia, South American fish come from South America, you cant just say "hey i'm gonna say thats a Asian fish because its got whiskers", besides the Amazon river is home to around 90% of the worlds catfish species so if anything it would be presumed that all whiskered catfish came from the Amazon.

If you would like a small Asian catfish then look for the Twin spot catfish (Mystus bimaculatus) which is a small reasonably peacefull catfish which reaches about 5 inches, it shouldnt be kept with very small fish like tetras, guppies etc but will not harm fish over 3 inches. Be aware though this is probably the ONLY community safe Mystus species you will come across so do not buy any other Mystus apart from these, also be very carefull not to mistakenly buy juvinile Sun catfish (Horabagrus brachysoma) which grow to around 18 inches and will eat all smaller tankmates.

ey, i wasnt the one who said it, my friends did :p
and suprisingly enough everybidy seems to think Festivums are gouramis,
and angel fish were bad examples anyway :p
i was just saying that they actually might fit in with the asian theme

also, i doubt the Twin spot catfish would be legal in Australia, just like most of the good catfish out there.....
