Starving Horse-- Theyre At My House Now!

Thats our next step if nothing happens over christmas, so tommorow if no one comes out, I think were just going to have to call Fox 5 and see if they will come out. But then again, they might not, and this horse looks so poor that the people could pawn him off as being old, and by appearance, he isnt old at all.

Another problem with throwing hay in his paddock is that if we do, the police/rescue people/ ag. people will come out and go ohhhhh their feeding again oh well lets go home. The only ones that would believe that we threw it would be the rescue people, but they have absolutly no authority to take the horse away without breaking the law as they would be going on private propterty AND stealing livestock.

Basically this whole situation is bad and theres not an easy answer. I think the news people would only come out for more than one starving horse in that condition because ive never seen a story on the news for ONE starving animal, maybe a house full of neected cats, but never just one.

Thanks again guys
Brittany

UPDATE:
On the chronicle of the horse forum ( I hope i can post that as it has absolutly nothing to do with fish ) a very nice person contacted us on her way to the place where the stoarving horse is living. The owner decided to give them away however there is a catch. Her ex husband doesnt know yet, so as of right now we are making arrangements to take them away ASAP before she decides to say no. We are contacting local equine rescues in the area, and if they cant take the horse until later, we will probably end up with him tonight.

On another note... the woman said the horse was 20 or so, which in some horses is old, and in others is relatively in the prime of life. This is still absolutely no excuse to have a horse in that condition unless you are rehabing, which the woman is not doing in the slightest. This horse could have any number of medical problems as well and today is a very bad day for it becuase it was raining all last night and is very damp and chilly right now with some high wind gusts, so an older horse, without any body fat, standing in a muddy paddock with a leanto for shelter isnt the optimum place for this horse to be. This is another reason why getting this horse off that piece of property ASAP is so important! Continue watching this topic for further updates, as I will try to keep everyone up to date as this is going on.

Thanks so much for the support guys, and keep this poor neglected horse in your thoughts

CONGRAJULATIONS!!!! Im glad to see that the horse is going to be with an owner who will take care and nourish this animal, i hope that everything goes well with the rehabilitation. Keep us updated!

Update #2

The horse is comming to live at my stable tommorow-thursday, at which point one of the equine rescues we have contacted will pick him up and rehab him. Hopefully hell make it through but sometimes when one goes downhill that much and starve they lose their appetite and refuse to eat because they forget what food is. If this is the case he might, unfortunately, have to be put down, but atleast he will serve as a reminder to people that neglection only causes pain on the animals part, and could cost the person alot of money.

The dept. of Ag. came out awhile ago and it charged a fee on this woman just because someone else called (not sure if its right but w/e she deserves it IMO) then, they told the woman that a vet (of their choice) would be visiting the property to check out the horse. IF the vet deemed it in poor condition, then it has to stay where it was for another 2 weeks or so when they come out to check again. If no progess has been made, they can take the horse away. Each time they come out though, they fine the owner. The way we did it, the owner payed nothing and basically we told her that if she didnt give it up to us, that she wuld end up paying for the same result-- the horse taken away. Basically she had no choice, so she was smart and chose the no cost method.

Im just glad this horse will be removed from her view forever (I hope).

However, I dont know if she asked mr ex hubby sooo there could still be an issue so please continue to keep this guy in your thoughts as he is not out of the clear yet and will not be until we get him to my barn and he is eating and acting happy.

Thanks for your support TFF

Good for you, for doing something. I've lived near neglected horses before, and have tried to do things, however it's usually somehow within the rules for the county. Though I have had some taken to a horse rescue near my house. I'm glad to hear that your rescue case is hopefully going to end happily. Keep us updated! :good:

Poor thing that's disgusting, that horse will not survive winter it needs a horse blanket on it to give it some warmth, as it will be cold to death need a stable.
I know horses can go thin after giving birth if the mare is old, as the foul taken alot out of her.
Also horses can go thin if the teeth want filling down.

That poor horse
That has not got like that in a short period of time it must have taken months of neglect to get into that condition

:good: on you for taking him on

unspoken930 :thanks:  good for you I've just read this thread. Thanks for being there for the horse he/she will love you for saving him/her.

even in the UK when you ring the RSPCA they still direct you to the local police, who in turn tell you to ring the RSPCA, and then the RSPCA tell you to call the police. yeh go figure it out cause i can't they're all muppets

Ugh, well i just finished typing a huge long post and it deleted so let me get back to typing that... stupid computer

Anyways...

Sorry i havent kept you guys updated, these horses (plural, i failed to mention the one that wasnt in such bad of shape) are so high maintenence. They have to be fed 4 times a day, small ammounds of food, plus the normal horsie things. My horses only have to be fed once a day a hand ful of vitamin supplament, flax seed, and sunflower seeds, plus 2 flakes of hay and the grass that their turned out on all day.

These horses have really been a joy to keep around, so much so that we contacted the rescue that was going to come and pick them up and told them that we would take care of them instead to leave 2 slots open at the rescue for slaughter bound horses. The gelding (the one who ive posted about earlier) is named Rocky H. He is a 14 (turning 15 july first, unusual race horse birthday...) ex-race horse. He didnt do to good at the track though, only winning 99$ at birmingham, when it was still around. His great grandfather on one side is Secretariat, and on the other side, way back there, he has Man O War. The other horse, a mare named Shea, is an Arabian, or so we think. She looks and acts just like one, and the local arabian farm thinks she is one as well. They looked at her and said she was probably 15-17 years old.

Its so weird having to be so extreamly careful about what these guys consume, and not trying to give them too much food, even out of kindness. They can only be fed this and that, but not something else, and if you feed them too much, they could have major health issues because they cant consume it. Believe it or not, these poor creatures were eating PIG FOOD. yes, Pig Food. The stupid lady probably thought "hmm, pigs are fat, my horses are skinny, lets feed 'em pig food" They also got no hay at all. Poor things. The minute we put them in their stalls at my barn, they chowed down on some nice alalpha hay. Ive never seen a horse so happy about food. They ate it so fast, the poor things probably thought it would be taken away before they got to finish eating it.

Here are some pictures. The first two are from the night they got to my barn.

This is Shea.

Its amazing how much these horses love humans after what they have been through. I cannot understand how much they love me and my mom after being neglected for so long. Shea will trot to me in the pasture when i whistle and clap my hands, and rocky follows at a walk since he doesnt have the energy to try and catch up with her. They love attension so much its unbelievable.

Soon, Shea will find a new home becuase shes perfectly capable of becoming some 4-H pony or something. If you know of anyone in the atlanta area looking to buy a nice Arabian mare, PM me. Rocky will also probably be finding a new home once we get him to a presentable stage in this progress, unless he turns out to be a perfect horse for me or my mom like we need another one

Thanks for being here guys

Brittany

Awww, what cuties! They look much happier already. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing their progress!

And come on, we always need another horse! Needing the funds to pay for them...that's a different matter. :look:

I'm not even going to say how many I have. It's a scary number. Way into the double-digits. :look:

I'll see if anyone I know near Atlanta wants a horse. Provided you all don't keep her. :)
