Hey Mates,

Good day to everyone. In the future I will be starting a new tank. Currently I have a 20 gallon tank which is doing pretty well. The fish seem healthy and seem to be comfortable in their surroundings. I have tetra, danios (zebra and large) and a rainbow shark (has not become a bully yet thankfully).

Anyhow, I was at petco today and they had a blowout on these ten gallon tanks. It was forty bucks and i could not pass it up. So i brought two. Anyhow in the future I want to start one with one of them. Now I am new...so I am taking my time and not starting tanks left and right. Trying to do it the right way. Currently, my 20 gallon has fake plants and a few good statues for hiding places, decoration etc.

What I was thinking, since they look so nice is that my ten gallon i would go with live plants...Any feedback for doing this with a ten gallon tank? Also, I really would be interested in starting a tank of the same fish predominately rather than a mix. My thoughts so far although I am far from sold on them is to start one with just tiger barbs....Their own tank...

So what I am curious is that if anyone has a tank just for a certain type of fish...what would you suggest as a fun attractive fish to be able to put all into one 10 gallon. How many too? And just for fun...Would they be compatible with a few catfish who would be hanging out at the bottom.

Again, thank you all for your helpful advice and comments.

Hi Jim and welcome to the forums,

Because you are thinking about a tank with basically only one type of fish, it becomes an even more personal thing. It could be any type of fish except those for which a 10G is too small (there are plenty of those but even more that will fit just fine.)

Personally I like the thought of a school of tetras of some sort appearing in and out of a lot of plants, but that's just my own idea of what would be fun. Lots of people would want a couple of fish a bit bigger that have more personality. I once had a couple of Jack Dempseys that made you feel like they were personal friends, but they need a bigger tank than you have.

One of the great values of this forum you will find are the pinned articles for beginners. If you haven't taken a look, you might want to to see if there are any new areas of fishkeeping practice that you want to explore.

Long finned Danios, a school of a certain kind of tetras (rummy nose, glow light, cardinal, etc), a school of harlequin rasboras. Either of these will look nice in a small planted tank. They're also very active and fun to watch.
