Hi was thinking of starting a betta tank with 1 male and 5 females.
I already have 4 glass fin blood tails in my 60lt tank.
As I am a beginner I am not planning on breeding them yet and wondering will this cause problems or will destroying the bubble nest be enough.
Also would it b better to increase the bloodfin shoal first,
Thanks all help appreciated ps i have a 8lr betta cube incase I need to move male or females or whatever lol

First off, amles and females cant be kept together because they eventually die off from stress and aggression.

second, im not sure that those tetras are compatible with bettas, specifically males, as they can be quite boisterous and hang about in top/middle of the tank, which is also where the betta chills out.

If it were me I'd get a sororoity of females (like you said with 5 females) just with no males, make sure you plant well to offer the bettas a place to rest, and dont get any less than five otherwise there will be aggression issues!

I agree. You should ideally have a minimum of 5 female bettas in a tank to avoid over aggression. You would need to house a male betta in a separate tank. Personally I would not keep a male in anything smaller than 15 litres.

Corys make great tank mates for bettas. I don't know anything about the fish that you already have though I'm afraid! Someone on here is bound to be able to advise you there though :) :good:

Thanks for replies,
If in the future I want to breed them when does he go in?

he doesnt go in the tank with the females, they need a separate tank to spawn in

Please research breeding though, you would need space to house 100+ bettas individually :good:

A home for each fry lol I'm not breeding then lol

You can't have a male in with the females. You could have only females together though wich we call a sorority. There are plenty here who have them

Hi so I got 5 females today to the shock of the lady in the shop who ask why do u want five, people usually get 1 male 1 female together, to which I replied the whole aggression thing I had picked up from forum and she said they don't fight...... As she is talking to me at least 12 females are having a brawl in their tank in shop next to her lol.
So 1 of my females is acting weird compared to the others, looks to be struggling and sitting at 45 degrees then lying at bottom. Is she just shy or should I be worried?? Thanks

Bettas do that so dont worry too much. If others are picking on her then keep her seperate. Look for ick, tail rot or anything out of the ordinary.

In my experience (and thats a lot of betta!) its not normal to lie on the floor, they will rest for short periods but this is usually on a plant or something.

With the females fighting i am guessing there's a few short finned males in there

Stu try and seperate this female if you can, even to a breeder box. And if you can get some pictures up so we can be sure your females are infact females :good:

I think I have narrowed it down to sbd as when she stops swimming her tail end sinks and she ends up vertical, she now rest alot more on my plant than on the bottom and flares at the other females when they try to move her on.
My bettas haven't been fighting it was in the pet store there was alot of nipping and flaring and the girl was pointing out short finned males that were in along with the females,
They are all eating fine but I'm gona try and isolate the ill one

Not sure how to post pics yet I'm using my phone :-(
I have separated her to my betta cube and plan to fast her then give her pea mmmmmm

Actually, I've seen female only tanks that definitely had no males in them at two of my local pet stores with some pretty pronounced fighting amongst the girls that in more than one case ended with some of the females dying due to stress.
