Stand Waterproof?

Hello, I will be picking up a 5 foot fish tank and thought I would have a go at building my own stand using Simonbrowns DIY guide. I was just wandering if I need to use any type of water proofing?

I built one with pine and used a waterproof wood stain, it works great. I'd recommend waterproofing it, it stops watermarks from unavoidable splashes and would probably help prevent it rotting at all.. I spose.
