My heater has suddenly started making a high pitch squeak/whine when it operates. Anyone else had this or know why it has happened?

It's an internal 150W btw.

I solved all my heater problems when I switched to in-line heaters. I'd be a little worried about yours ... check it fairly often to make sure it's still working.

its probably on its way out.....

eheim are the best IMO

There are a few reasons why they do this, but most worryingly when the seal has gone, which means that expanding air will cause a pressure move when it starts to heat up. Every heater that I had that did this exploded, but I am only talking about 2 of them out of many, so it's not the best of data sets. Used to be a common fault along with condensation, but then I used to seal back up my own heaters.

I have and it died soon after. I would replace it now and avoid the hassle. Mine put out an electric shock when it went.

Mine did that too, and with other problems I had with those types of heaters I decided to go with the in-line versions. A little spendy, but I think they're well worth the extra cost.

Also, you don't have that extra piece of equipment in the tank. Makes for a much neater appearance.

Good advice thanks. Do in-line heaters make any noise at all? Any any recommendations on which make is best?

The only noise they make is a tiny "click" when they cycle on or off. Mine are all Hydor brand.

i had my current heater click really loud, i couldn' figure it out. I had my heater horizontal in my tank and i turned it vertical and i haven't heard a noise since.. I don't know why it was making that noise but like i said its gone now

Is this a Hydor also?

Just looking at the hydor heaters.
I see there is the 200 and 300. I'm currently with a 120L tank but looking to expand within a year or two. Is there any problem running the 300 in a smaller tank?

Not at all. A 300W will just heat the water more quickly and consequently be on for less time, but obviously consume more electricity as it does so.

Thanks guys! My final question.... :)

I've got an eheim filter, the tubing is 12/16mm. Therefore which heater do I need? A 12mm or a 16mm?

You need the 12 I think

As it goes 16/22 is the biggest.
