Sponge Filters Question.

Hello all, I just returned from the fish shop with a) some new fish and b) a new sponge filter for my shrimp tank.

First the sponge filter:

It is my understanding that sponge filters also produce oxygen from the bubbles? Is it worth replacing my air stone in my 125L tank with a sponge filter? Since having both surely does the job of oxygenating and filtering the water on top of the other 2 filters I have?

Onto the fish, I decided to go with some female Betta fish, got 4 of them for £8. I also got 5 pure red ballon platys. I am currently acclimatising them.

Just to be clear here, airstones do not produce oxygen. It's the disturbance at the surface of the water that encourages gas exchange thus letting out the carbon dioxide and letting oxygen in. Sponge filters are usually run with an airline, so in essence it will do about the same good as an airstone for gas exchange (well actually the airstone diffuses the air coming from the air pump into smaller bubbles resulting in a little more surface agitation, but even a naked airline in the tank will disturb the surface enough to allow for proper gas exchange.)
