Hi

I've heard and read a few things about Spirulina. It's supposed to be colour enhancing, and really good for your fish and plants - or something like that? I just wanted to know exactly what it is, and which manufacturer makes the best variety of it? I.e. flakes etc.

Thanks :D

Spirulina is a type of bacteria that uses photosynthesis, which i guess is why some people call it algae....
You can buy it in powder form at you local health food shop, you can use the powder in home made fish food or to feed to very young fish. The powder is also good for feeding brine shrimp.
Or you can buy it in flake forum off ebay.
Look at the ingredients of the food you feed your fish now, and you will probably see it in there already :good: .

Hikari use Spirinula in most of their cichlid foods, Nutrafin have Spirinula sticks, Tetra Pro veggie - just to name a couple. You can also buy Spirinula enriched frozen brine shrimp.

So it's found in normal food? It is really only for colour enhancement then?
I use Tetramin Flake Food, Algae wafers and Tetra Prima Granule (and bloodworm) for feeding my fish, do you think I need to get some supplemental spirulina, or will they all be fine on what they've got?
Just want to give them the best I can. :)

If you already feed them TetraMin, the green flakes are spirulina. Try frozen food 2-3 times a week, too, if you aren't already.

I feed mine alot of spirulina as it helps: color, growth, immune system, length of life. My fish go crazy for it anyway and yes it is a algea.

I got some of Nutrafin's Spirulina Tablets - you press them to the side of the tank and they stick at whatever height or let them sink for bottom dwellers - though after awhile they become soggy and slide down. I tried one in there yesterday but no one seemed very interested - I thought they were sposed to be a 'treat' and tasty and the fish would go nuts for them, but oh well! Ended up removing what was left. Might try again some other time when I have more fish.
