HI all,

I'm new to this site, but not new to fish keeping (12 years)

I don't really look after my fish any more as I have left it to my mother.

Last night she was attempting to increase the Ph with Ph up. The bottle normally has a dropper tip on it. This one didn't!!!! As you can guess she tipped it up over the tank and pout half the bottle in.

The tank immediately went very cloudy (white). I tested the Ph and the colour was a blue, nearly purple, giving a Ph of around 10-11. Obviously well above desired Ph.

I had no Ph down, and probably would of steered away from having to put such a large amount of chemicals in the water even to counter the Ph increaser.

I thought the best idea was to empty virtually all the water and then re-fill with clean. I was unsure how long the fish had in these conditions and wanted to get them out asap. I also had no other tank water to keep them in, so all this was done with the fish in the tank.

The tank is a Jewel (one with curved front) and holds around 40 gallons. I emptied around 32 gallons and then filled with water (treated appropriately with Aquasafe).

I left all the bio filter alone hoping it would regain its bacteria over a few days.

I also added a half dose of general tonic which prevent bacterial infections. Not sure if this will help???

Could anybody tell me if my fish will be okay and whether I should of handled the situation differently.

This was last night around 7.00pm and they were all alive when I left for work this morning.

Is there anything I should be aware of and keep my eye out for in the next few days???

Thanks all for reading.

Hi,

I'm no expert but I would have thought getting some carbon in your filter and whacking it on full power will soon extract all the chemicals.

Water change, add new filter floss and black carbon, and increase aeration.
