Hi all,

I think one of my tetra is ill,
the area around one of his gills look sore and inflamed and he has what looks like a tiny swollen pimple on one side where the base of his tail meets his body.
He has also started flicking and rubbing himself on things in the tank and looks like he is breathing faster than all the others. He doesn't swim with the other tetra as much as he use to either.
Any idea what this could be?
is it contagious to any of my other fish?

I have a 130L fresh water aquarium with 2x bristlenose Pecos 4x Corydora 6x Tetra and 4x Platy.
Water condition appears good Ph 7 - 8, Nitrite and Nitrate both 0, General Hardness is very high 180ppm and Carbonate Hardness 120ppm.

Plz help!

what about ammonia ? as ammonia burns the hell outa there poor gills

The test strips I'm using don't tell me ammonia levels, going to the LFS today, so i can grab a test kit and let you know later today.
any idea what could be making some of my fish flick themselves against rocks and thing in the tank?

ya need to throw them strips away once ya get a liquid test kit :p, could be sometype of parasite, wilder is the best person to answe this question

Need to rule out bad water quality first.

If the gills are red and inflamed and the fish is heavy breathing and flicking and rubbing, it could be gill flukes.

Signs of gills fluke are
Pale gills with excess slime, red inflamed gills, gills look like there bleeding.
Flicking and rubbing.
Darting or erratic swimming.
Laboured breathing or gasping at surface of tank.
Red sores or red pin prick marks on the fish body.
Fish will sometimes swim in a jerky movement.
Spitting food out.
Weightloss sometimes.

Thanks for the quick feedback,

I just got hold of a Nutrafin liquid test kit.
pH = 7.0-7.5
Ammonia = 0 mg/L
Nitrate = 5 mg/L
Nitrite = 0 mg/L
My tetra does have some of the signs of gill flukes.
Flicking and rubbing against objects in the tank.
Sometimes Darting or erratic swimming.
Labored breathing or gasping but not going to the top of the tank.
Sometimes swimming in a jerky movement.
But have not seen any of the other signs mentioned.

I would treat the whole tank for gill flukes.

Wormer plus which you buy online or sterazin by waterlife.

I only managed to get hold of interpet Anti Internal Bacteria No9, the guy in the LFS said it was ideal for my symptoms, after reading all about it for myself, I'm not so sure.
Do u have any experience with this stuff? it sounds like a very potent treatment.
Is this suitable?

Oh, how long should i use carbon filters for to clear the medication after treatment?

Thanks

just noticed more strange behavior.
one of my platy has started spending allot of time next to heater, behaves normally when swimming around and feeding but spending 75% of its time huddled next to the heater especially when its on?
(my tank drops to 24 degrees at night and stays just under 25 degrees during the day)
and two of my tetra are starting to look bent, this doesn't effect them swimming around but when stationary they both appear to have a kink half way down there bodies?

Bent spine can be old age, fish tb, vitamin defiency, internal parasites, injury.

Any fish look skinny or bloated.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
Is there anus enlarged or red and inflamed.
Any worms prutruding from the anus.

It is the wrong med but it could be something else now.
It could be internal parasites and they can flick and rub with them.
