Something Strange Going On

I have Platys, Cardinal Tetras, 3 Killifish (two female one male and the community type) and a female Betta. My Betta never attacks anything, in fact the platys are more nippy than her.

I noticed my male Killi mating with the females sort of on the gravel rubing up on her the past week or so. Then I noticed the males back fins were all clamped. Then yesterday they're gone! Totally bitten off and he looks weird like half a fish!

What do you think is going on there? The nippy fish in the tank from me watching are the platys. I've never seen any fighting.

The water is al good too.

My bet is on the betta having munched that tail!

When I didn't know any better (no pun intended) I was told by my lfs that I could put both female and male bettas together, which I did and for about a month everything was fine. Then one day the female completely ravaged the males finnage - literally he had barely anything left at all of any of his fins. I just caught her attacking him. (Glad to say that he survived after being separated and given lots of TLC and nursing back to health).

So, even though a betta may appear to live harmoniously with other tankmates - be sure that they can switch at any time. After all, that's why they're called fighting fish and not angels lol (although those angels can be little rotters too lol)

I honestly don't think it's her. I watch the tank and the nippy things are the platys. They even nip my snail! My Betta pays no mind to anything in the tank. Putting two Bettas together in a tank is a totally differnt situation.

I think its they betta too. They are teritorial, not nippy. My bet is the other fish got too close or did something to agrivate her. You're lucky she didn't kill the other fish. Platies are not known for lashing out like that. If it was them then there would only be small tears or modirate chunks taken out. I have guppies that cause more damage than my platies. It could always be the females he tried to mate with and there is a small chance it could be the platies.

It could have been the platy...someone posted on the forum(can't recall who now) how their platy killed off the other platy's in the bag on the way home from the lfs...so obviously they can be violent in some circumstances. But, my female Betta is agressive towards my platy's and my female honey gourami...so..I wouldn't put it past your Betta either. Time will tell. Who knows, maybe the female killifish decided the male wasn't "up to snuff" so to speak lol and decided to take a round out of him

That was me talking about my male molly that killed off his tank mates in the bag on the way home from the LFS. He is now all by himself in a 5g tank because I've tried him everywhere else but he keeps attacking the other fish. When he went after my cories yesterday, that was it. So now I'm going to try to find him a new home. I guess I could try him in my husband's tank with the Jack Dempseys and firemouth cichlids!

Platties can be little sods, it wouldn't suprise me if it was them Marie.

I had platys that would nip cory fins when they were feeding to chase them away and then steal the pellets. Especially on the albino corys, their fins were really messed up. I also had a female that systematically pecked and harassed my other females to death one by one until I had chance to give her away.

I'll never keep platys again, the little terrorists. Bred faster than guppies, took over the tank and drove the other fish bonkers. I have one small male leftover in my tank who is too tiny to do much damage but he'll be watched carefully and shipped off to lfs at the first peck.

And I've never had a nasty betta yet!

I recently added a group of 3 Platties to my tank, but they're in with Columbian Red Fin Tetras, an Ellioti, a pair of Angels and a pair of Thomasi... All these fish should be able to sort them out of they feel the need to...

Thanks guys, I really do not think it is my Betta I watch the tank and she is never territorial or agressive in any way. The platys are the most viscious little fish I've got. They nip everything and I've seen them chasing. The killi's tail is growing back at a rapid rate thank god.

Clean water is a great healer. When i added the 3 Platties, one of them was nipped by something in the tank (probably the columbian red fins) and it was back to full health 3 days later.
