I don't know if this is a common thing, but after you do a water change, bio waste and other stuff are kicked up from the gravel, and the fish are eating it! This is very disturbing in a way. So, is it bad, ok, doesn't matter or will it make them sick puupies? They are zebra danios to be exact.

And another question about algae, do those algae-be-gone chemicals work, or just fluoflaa?

Once you get the siphon going, try pushing it up and down into the gravel and avoid stirring it around. If there is a lot of waste accumulated, try cleaning it more often.

There is also the possibility that there is uneaten food being kicked up and the fish are going after that. In this case, feed them a bit less and definitely clean more often. If you are feeding pellets or wafers, look at the ingredients. Some of them will contain a lot of grain products that separate and sink into the gravel. If so, you might want to try another brand.
