Just joined a facebook group called Betta Fish and I'm so sad that many people are keeping betta in jam jar size tank and not heaters or a filter :( It not the person I feel sorry for as much as the fish! where do they get the information from to keep these fish like this?

Sick isn't it. Some people just don't want to know though. They see someone keeping it in a jam jar and think it's fine, so they do it... it just goes on and on

My sister's friend who's newest BF thinks he knows about fish argues that my Sammy (Betta) doesn't need a filter. Makes me angry.

people should not keep any type of pet before researching its needs first. we are responsible for the fish we keep and they are dependant on us for their care. if you don't know what you are doing, and sren't willing to learn, don't bother getting them!! makes me sick!!

L :grr:

John what you have probably seen are breeder barracks, these fish are welll looked after (most of the time) they get daily water changes so theres no need for a filter, as the fish are only in there until sold the size is 'acceptable'.

Nobody ever understands this until they breed themselves, can you imagine having to have 100+ heated filtered 3 gal tanks around?

You might be right, just starting up with betta? but if anyone that is on facebook you can look at these bowls and tanks, You will say these are ok to be kept like this? :)

My link Facebook Betta

Some of the photos do look like permanent homes  Some look like small goldfish bowls and others look like a glass! The only time I feel that it is acceptable to keep bettas in small confinements is when they are jarred as fry, ready to bring on and sell. It would not be practical to have larger tanks for each fry as a spawn could produce a hundred fry! :)

Majority of the bettas on there have finrot, or the owners think they're female when they're obviously (to me, anyway!) male.
