I used roots from hard wood(hickory I think) These had a lot of small branch's which I liked better.
used Java moss as that was all I could get....would like to find something better, maybe faster.
used dark green thread to hold it in place...I will trim it to shape as it grows
I boiled the roots for a few hours, changing the water until the tannins were out and water was clear.
I used my pressure washer to remover all the bark which was softened by the boiling. these tend to sink so no floating troubles...
the left one is still wet. I dried them in the oven on low for an hour or so...

the tank is a 40 gal
I entered the TOTM contest but used my older tress...maybe next time I'll use these, but want to see how they grow and the shape they take...
 
I have a big load of them . I just need to boil them then pressure wash em
some are huge
