The new convict parents. Couldn't get a good pic of the fry.

My flying fox transplanted from my old 10 gal to the new 25 gal.

Here's what the poor firemouth looked like last night. Hope to see some improvement tonight 24 hours after first meds.

Thanks cometcattle. Most are real plants. The swords, bacopa and a couple of other broad leafed plants are real. It took a great deal of work to clean it up when I got it.

what happened to your poor firemouth??

I was about to ask the same thing. I take it it was the convicts being good parents???

He was in the 37 gal tank with the convicts and I rescued him by putting him in my recently acquired 25 gal community tank.

The picture I posted was taken last evening. He is showing improvement 24 hours later.

Most of the fungal growth is gone but it reveals that there is not much left underneath it. Two thirds or more of his caudal fin, pectoral fins and the the end of his dorsal are gone. He has some damage in his aft upper half as well.

He seemed to show more energy this evening and rose to the surface to eat for the first time since rescuing him.

I have no choice but to treat the whole tank and used a light half dose of aquarium salt one night only, combined with a prescribed dose of Pimafix two consecutive nights. I can't visually notice any adverse affects on his tankmates.

So after that ramble ... a question I've never had to ask ... Will his fins regenerate?

I'm hoping he comes out of this a kindler, gentler cichlid. Has anyone ever heard of a firemouth inhabiting a community tank?

One last thing, I promised myself that I would never name my fish and the firemouth is only the second. I've decided to name him Private Ryan. Wish him luck!

Yeah, good luck to him!!!
When my sajicas spawned, they had a bit of a nibble of my gibbys fin. It wasn't as torn up as your poor little guy there, but it had quite a chunk missing. That is now fully restored and he is fine. Hopefully Private Ryan will make the same recovery!!! Keep us posted!!

Wow, great pics, F 1

The tank and fish look awesome

Poor firemouth, I hope he recovers quickly :)

awsome! how big is the new tank

:kewlpics:

The new tank is 25 gal dwarf_dude. Private Ryan is out and about a bit more every day. I really hope his fins regenerate.

Private Ryan is doing better everyday.

The fungus is almost gone now. When it is, my plan is to treat with melafix to help heal him and regenerate his fins. Is this right?
