Hi all - Thought I'd put a couple more pics on - more to show the muppets (sorry garden eels) than anything else. They have got to be some of the most entertaining (grumpy) fish in the world. The photos aren't the best quality but you can get the idea.

Those garden eels are really cool. I've never seen them before. Are they rare?

Hi all, thanks for the comments - I think the garden eels might be quite rare, I spend an awful lot of time in fish shops (actually quite a sad amount of time!) and I have only seen them twice - I think they might be seasonal as well. Not sure if many shops avoid them because the text books (that we read and the fish don't) reckon they are really difficult to keep. I've had them for ages and never a day's trouble. They are suberb for fish watching - always grumping about something and playing tug of war with food.

Never heard of them before, do you think you could get a video so we could see their behaviour. :good:

Sure, I'll have a go (I've only just figured out how to use a digital camera and this forum!) Yes - I'm usless with technology.

Hi - I've managed to get a bit of a video together showing the garden eels - it's not great because of the white sand but you get the idea what they're about. If you look you can see one have a go at a shrimp fish and a small squabble amongst themselves - it makes me laugh the way they duck when other fish go over them!

Love the tank. the eels are cool, must be the oddest and enternaining tank inhabitant i've seen.

Hey, great job with the vid :good: Those garden eels look awsome. Do you know how long they are?

Hi - Yeah believe it or not they're 24 inches! They have a re-enforced tail fin which they use to dig their burrow tail first. They only come out fully if they get stressed - if they are out swimming they make a bee-line for the lid to escape I kept on having to poke them back in when I first got them (and you want to try catching them with a net!). They need about 6" - 8" sand so they don't damage their tails on the bottom of the tank while they're excavating.

Wow, 24" is pretty big :hyper: . Cheers for sharing that with us Flagfin :good:

No worries Matty P - I've just had a look at you web site - you've got some pretty awesome fish/tanks. I've ended up with the more au naturale look (ok messy) cos I need loads of macro algae for the species I've got. (actually that must be an excuse because my FOWLR tank is also a bit messy. Must be the natural gardener in me!
