I have seen a few fish swimmin to surface of water and realesing air bubbles from gills, why are they doin this?thanks

Do they release bubbles from their gills, or are they actually going to the surface for air and as a consequence release bubbles through their gills?

One of my odd goldfish swims though the bubbles and then breathes bubbles out of it's gills :).
