So Iv Got My Tank...

Oh the light is strong enough i can tell you that now lol.

Il take my dads filter apart tomorow. But its only been going 4 weeks, weve had fish in for 3 weeks. Will it really be beneficial? Currently have what i have in the sig!

Oh okay!

Can you give me a link to the product, i searched for ammonia in pet websites and it just brought up the tests. Ebay link or summit.

You can't get it from ebay. Boots sell a bottle of Household Ammonia. It's about £1.50 for a bottle:

Only three weeks with fish? From your descriptions, I thought you had a mature tank going. It likely doesn't have very much of a stable bacteria colony built up just yet, don't go adding any more fish in there until you get it stable! A brand new cycling tank is likely what killed your pleco as well. Get some readings for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates from the big tank, I'd focus on sorting out the cycle in there before starting up a new tank cycling. Your ammonia and nitrites should be a constant zero in the big tank when it's fully cycled, then I'd leave it going for a few months before borrowing any filter media from it.

Yes like i said, neither me nor my dad had this vast knowledge that iv gained so far off these forums when we set out.

We just followed the instructions of what P@H and Dobbies told us as we were new to this, they said fill the tank up, add the chemical provided (Aqua Plus), take a sample back to the shop after a week. So we took the sample back after a week and they tested it and said it was fine to add fish.

Luckily iv came across these forums to set up my fish tank properly Guess im going to have to search for some Ammonia tomorow. So any "household" ammonia is fine? When i come to add ammonia to my 35L tank, how much do i add exactly? Iv read cycling and the parts about ammonia, but i dont see any information on how much exactly should be added!?

BTW im back at home now, and my water temperature is just under 27oC, which is top of the green section on my thermometer. Also something i forgot to mention earlier is that on the suction thing which is holding it to the glass of the tank, theres some kind of creamy stuff, and some of the little bits hanging off i can see moving due to the movement of the water. Any ideas? Cant get a picture as my camera aint that good.

Please read the pinned threads on cycling on this site. The less advice you ask from your local shops, the better. You'll get much better advice here; we're not here to make money from you - the shops ARE. Good luck.

No you can't just get any type of Ammonia, you have to make sure it's pure ammonia only. Some contain other things which aren't good for your tank or future fish. But the one from Boots which I mentioned above if fine to use and was recommended to me by someone on here.

As for knowing how much to add, buy a pipette if you don't already have one. I have a 100 litre tank and I have to add 40ml of ammonia to get a reading of 4.0 when I do a test for ammonia. Just keep adding a little at a time and then test to see what the reading is, if it's not high enough then add a little more ammonia until it is right.

I edited my post above to give you advice on how much to add to your tank.

Thanks.

Once iv added the ammonia should i wait 10 minutes before testing? Im going to start with 2 drops i think, my pipette has no markings so i just have to go by "drop" count lol! But the drops are about the same size as the ones that come out of the API bottles.

2 drops lifted the ammonia levels to roughly 0.25-0.50. Added another two drops, boy is this going to take the mick lol!

Edit: I applied another 2 drops (4 in total), and it raised the levels to about 1.0. So iv added an additional 4 drops of ammonia (8 in total now) This is the thing im using:

Is the number of drops high because my pipette thing is so small?
