Then a friend came round with 2 stunning crown tails for now they're in a 10L bowl each with make shift heater that is in fact a desk lamp and a pot of hair grass. As soon as i have money they will have new homes.

He didnt go into the same tank as the female did he?

Beautyful bettas though  :hyper:

yup have always had her in with males just forgot she'd always had another female for company hence his poor tail. Now there's a second female again she's back to her placid self.

He's doing fine and has made good friends with my sucking catfish

no no no no no!

males and females, should never be housed together, at all! her fins are in bad shape, which leads to believe that she is fighting, having her fins nipped. Please do your research on betta splendens, for the health of your fish.

It is not healthy for the females, males will stress them out, leading to a shorter life span. All it takes is for the male to become vicious and could end in a female being seriously damaged or killed. Your 'halfmoon' female is actually a crowntail and not a half moon and your new boy has a case of finrot.

I've got to agree that MOST of the time males and females can't be house with eachother AT ALL. However it does seem to be becoming more and more possible as more fish are bred. Once upon a time they were bred for agression, now they are bred for coloration... so some of the agression seems to be being lost.

In this situation clearly they can be housed together...but... their fins are all in awful condition. So although you say you got the second female to stop the fighting I really would suggest you re-home the females (or the male) to a seperate tank. You don't want to wake up one day to find a fish 'randomly' dead due to some sort of infection cause by open wounds on the fins.

Just my 2 cents but all your bettas have ripped/torn fins which means there must be some squabbles going on. Plus i'm fairly sure I saw young betta fry in this picture, if their in the same tank they will breed im sure.

In that picture the fish in the background is actually a crystal gourami.

There was some squabbling between the original female and the male. Had tried her in with the dark crwowntail boy and he'd worried her to no end.so when i swapped the boys over she instantly arced up towards him quite badly, so overnight put her in the breeding box until i could get up to get another tank in the morning. when i got up they were side by side through the perspex quite calmly and she got along very well with my last VT boy. so watching very closely put them back in together now all's settling down haven't seen any fin nipping whatsoever and sitting next to tank 6 hours a day.

I'm keeping an eye on it but putting it down to new fish squabbling. treating them with melafix now worked when what i had my nasty sailfin mollie. most of the damage on the girls was from the mollie in the case of the pink girl and the LFS in the case of the CT

Thought the purple girl might be CT but can always hope :p
