Snails?

I just recently put some plants in my Fancy Guppy tank. I noticed a few snails in the tank when i put the plants in. I didnt think they would harm anything so i left them in their, and now their just multiplying. Every time I feed my Fry I make it a point to pull a few out but they just reapere the next day Do you guys have any advice on how to get rid of snails, or if their a harm to the balance of my tank. Thanks guys

I saw a very mini size puffer in my LFS last night, according to the seller, he said this puffer is fed on snail. May be you could do some research to find out more on "puffer".

Or another idea I could think of is throw a piece of cucumber into the tank and let the snail to gather there, then take out the whole piece with them sticking on and throw it.

The eggs are covered in a jelly-like gel. Remove it.

These are just my personnal idea, if anyone with better one, pls share.

Cant use puffers as they will find it eaiser to nip on the guppies then snail's

their are chemicals u can use to kill snails, but u have to be very sure of what you doing as it's a very fine line between killing just snail and killing all the snails and all you fish as well.

Clown loaches love snails but they also love baby guppies although they will leave adualts alone, but u need at least 4 fish as their a socieral fish and done not like being in small numbers.

helterskelter; i second this. I had a population of over a hundred snails. I couldn't get rid of them. I then decided to get three clown loaches (cause they are social) about a year ago, and they cleaned everything up; although the shells were left on the bottom for me to clean. They do a really good job in getting rid of snails.

Although i had baby guppies in the tank, and they didn't even go near them. I had no problems, but i guess i was just lucky.

What about after the Loaches kill all of the snails? What else do they eat? I'm worried about this because they are kinda cool looken and I don't want them just dying.

Would 1 Loach be ok? Or does he need a buddy? I only have the snail problem in my livebearer tank wich is only a 10 gallon. so i dont want to push the capability of my tank givin its small size?

Nope. 5 is a good number. However, your 10 gal tank is not big enough for one loach. They can get to 12 inches. I would suggest the minimum size for clowns is 90 gal. in a too small tank they will be growth stunted with all the difficulties that comes with that. Also their life expectancy will be greatly diminished. These guys regularly exceed 10 years.

This won't rid you off all your snails, but if you put a piece of lettuce in the tank, you can remove it later and all attached snails. It's a pretty common method employed by tank keepers.

I tried this last night and it resulted in not a single snail being removed this morning. No idea what I did wrong

Mmmm... what is in my mind is that, if u leave it overnight, the snails are all full and left the cucumber on the next morning. Why not just try to leave it there for a shorter period with some observations? Take it out when you see some snails are there and remove the snails then put the cucumber in again at the same location.

Sorry to bring this topic back to life. But i recently went on a rampage and cleaned "all" the snails out of my tank. By hand, by lettace, and cucumber. But the population exploded again I cant put a clown loach in their becouse its one of my 10 gal breeding tanks. I need a new method....Anybody?

There are chemicals, but like with any chemicals with fish, it's not really the prefered solution.

Depending on how desperate you are and how much time you have, if you took out all the fish and filled the tank with strong salt solution, left it a while, emptied and rinsed a few times, that should do the trick. The trace amount of salt left won't do the fish any harm.
