Snails Snails And More Snails

Thanks guys. That is a huge commitment, I had no idea they would live so long, I’m not sure if they are the answer for me. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have heard snails can reproduce at an alaming rate, is it possible to keep their numbers under control?

Are Assassin Snails common in LFS? I have never come across them before.

It is possible to keep their numbers under control, if you don't over feed and don't let plants or left over food decay in the tank, most people that have snail infestations are guilty of one of the two, I have snails in my tank, I welcome them, I have about 10-20 in there.

Asassins are available in a few LFS's here in Northern Ireland but you have to shop about really.

You could put an ad on the wanted section on here or have a look on ebay. Phone about LFS's too.

Sounds like with my continued care and maintenance, I could accommodate these. I would estimate I have about 5-10 currently and I have heard they can be good for the tank so maybe I should take this route and always invest in the assassins if things do start getting out of control. I have about 6 LFS so I’m sure one of them will stock them.

I’m not sure how they got there. I had purchased some fish the week before some maybe the eggs got in the bag somehow?

I got my assassin snails over eBay for a couple of quid a piece. They work great in my planted shrimp tank as they got rid of my pest snails but don't harm my shrimp or plants. Plus, they are stunning to look at. The shell pattern is beautiful. I'd highly recommend 2 or 3 assassin snails. They breed very slowly as far as I'm aware.

Thanks James, I will be sure to look out for them.

If they pretty much do the same job as the pest snails but dont breed too quickly, its sounds like the best way forward.
