Snail Problem

Take a look at the pinned thread(s) in inverts section for some manual ways to remove snails, but if you are looking for fish to eradicate them, take a look at the botia loaches, erm, i think a small one is botia sidthimunki http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=34950 (sp?) that could do the job, and im pretty sure they dont get any bigger than 2 or 3 inches.

Oh, and please, if you know whats good for you (or should i say your fish) dont get a puffer, yes, someone elses dwarf puffer may be fine in a community, it has been done, but rarely, and any experienced puffer owner (not me, but hey this is what i heard) will tell you that the personality of puffers changes from fish to fish, one fish may be fine, but another may, and will, not be that way at all, and DPs may be small, but they pack a punch, and are one of the worst fin nippers at the best of times :look: . So dont consider it :p . and just to clear things up, a figure 8 puffer does require brackish waters, it may survive in freshwaters, but it aint happy with it  see here http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=98398

HTH :good:

I agree with what all Puffer, MJ and Geo said. Puffers can very easily kill fish and figure 8's are brackish or at least hard alkali water. I can't see why you'd borrow a puffer, the stress of bringing in to your tnak and then catching it again is pointless. Also it says 'lost but not forgot' or something along those lines about Raven's shrimp. Also I wasn't causing an arguement I was stating fact.

Don't worry, you're not offending me at all! I've done all the things I suggested many times so they are fact! (except i've never borrowed a puffer I always keep mine) Figure 8's are freshwater check fishbase if you need a PhD to tell you. I'd trust them over anyone else!
Fishbase Figure 8 Puffer Species Summary

In the end it doesn't really matter anyway I'm not going to lose sleep if someone doubts my advise! that's what these boards are for, so people can share expertise and experience!

By the way, I've kept figure 8's, GSP's, and Dwarf puffers for 5 years solid now and never had a puffer kill another fish except my GSP who once ate a feeder guppy that was intended for a tankmate! so as far as I'm concerned, my advise is solid! Take it or leave it!

Heh. You may be right, I'm just stating what I have read on every fish site I have visited, I am, of course, no expert on wild puffers, and have not studied them in the wild, but I'm sure I've read a journal somewhere of someone that has, and found them in brackish. But that's not for me to argue.

Puffers do range from fish to fish, so you may have just got lucky. Personally, I believe in keeping fish in the best possible conditions, and a puffer having a tank to itself is great for most puffers (apart from perhaps Dwaf Puffers, which do well in tanks with a few others of the same species, and a possibility of plecs).

it might be with your fish but it isnt with all puffers, the personality of a puffer is never set in stone. And i dont know but i prefer to take people on this forums advice, and most, if not all people on here will say that figure 8s require brackish waters, yes they can live in fresh, but as i say, it is nowhere near ideal, whoever wrote fishbase is probably one person who like you, thinks that figure 8s are meant to be freshwater, compared to many experienced members on here, i know whos opinion id like to go with :good:

W.J. Rainboth was the main reference for fishbase, he is an icthyologist. I'd listen to someone who has made a carreer out of studying the lifecycles and habitats of fish before I'd listen to an aquarist. not that aquarists don't have valued input but they usually don't have PhD's in fish biology!

This discussion is dead anyway, noone really cares how The-Raven removes his snails, in the end we are all just spinning our tires with eachother so I'm going to bow out of the discussion now!
