I have a nice load of snails in my tank thats I want gone.
I have no fish in the tank would it still be inadvisable to use snail killer?
I don't want to add any fish or buy then anytime soon as I'm still learning.

Maybe a 1/2 dose for twice as long or just a normal dose?
any recommendations,
thanks.
Carl

when i used snail killer it diddnt work!
get a fish that eats snails..

as my post Said, I don't fancy having any fish in my planted tank as I'm still learning and changing stuff etc..

Havn't really come across something that is sold to kill snails. There are products to knock them out and then you pick them out by hand. One of the most effective ways of depleating the population is simply feeding less. You should notice an impact in snails and then it will be bearable to take out the remaining ones by hand. Good luck.

as Said I have no Fish so I'm not putting food into my tank............

I have loads of little ones (snails) Forgotten their name... they are very unsightly and I have a few bigger ones But Hard to find them and they are damaging my plants.

So no one have any idea if Snail killer in my tank will butcher my plants...
Sorry for the shameless bump I'm just desperate to sort this out..

I can tell you how. But it will take time.

If you're willing to spend 3 - 4 weeks to kill ALL snails AND their eggs then use something called Flubenol 15.

I had a massive problem with Pond Snails (Physa Acuta). Damn things were everywhere, my tank was planted, had fish & shrimp. Poxy things were even in my filter! I did NOT want to use copper based products as this is a POISON, so the standard off the shelf crap (which doesn't work anyway) was out of the question.

4 once a week doses of Flubenol 15 (a NON copper based Medication for fish) and bosh. No more bloody snails. PERIOD.

If you are interested I will tell you where to get it from and how to use it.

Andy

yes I sure am interested,
I guess Copper based is still a problem even without any fish in my tank because of the plant?

One easy solution is to put some kind of vegetable in there and wait overnight. In the morning they will be all over it and you can just lift it out of your tank and discard. :good:

The eggs get on there too do they? Sorry but I personally think this is a useless technique. Can never work, unless you just manage to catch the only 3 or 4 snails in the whole tank who have not laid eggs anywhere. If you have an infestation I cannot see how this can possibly completely rid a tank of snails.

Get some from here:

How big is your tank (in litres) & I'll work out how much you'll need from that. This stuff will kill ALL snails, good & bad btw.

I have snails in my tank and have know problems with them I sometimes pick a few out but they leave my plants alone so I really dont bother with them it is sad actually they have grown quite large over hte months.

SohC, I need to know LITRES because I don't know if your 22Gal is imperial or US gallons! It makes a difference.

Anyway, lets ASSUME that this is US Gallons, so 22 US Gallons = 83 Litres = 18 imperial gallons.

A side effect of the Flubenol 15 medication for fish is that it will kill snails (by causing them to starve). It does NOT kill the eggs, so I suggest repeated dosing over a long period of time (a month) to initially kill the snails (and hence stop egg laying) and then kill any egg hatchlings (so that no more eggs get laid). Viola, one month later, no snails.

Flubenol 15 is purchased in 1 tsp amount, this is 4ml and is a one-off treatment for 100 imperial gallons: In other words, when you purchase 4ml, you have 5 treatments. This is good and should cost you less than a fiver to treat your tank.

So, buy the smallest amount (4ml). When you get the powder, split it as accurately as you can into 4 or 5 amounts (4 is easier to divide up, but if you manage to get 5 equal parts you can treat for a longer period of time and therefore making more sure that all egg hatchlings are killed as well).

To use, every Saturday (or whatever!), fill a clean jam jar 1/2 full of tank water and add a quarter or a fifth of the power to it. Put the lid on and shake it like a lunatic for about 5 mins and then pour into your tank. Clean the jar out in the tank - get all the dose in there! The tank will go cloudy for a couple of hours - don't worry.

After about 1-2 weeks you'll notice a change in behaviour in the snails - they'll start congregating at the water edge and not move about much - keep picking as many as you can out. After about 3 - 4 weeks they'll be gone - KEEP DOSING though. Do NOT crush the snails - this may realease eggs into the water.

Warning: Pick as many snails out as you can! Don't leave dead ones in there to rot as this will release ammonia, so keep an eye on levels of NH4!

Good Luck & let me know how you get on?

Cheers,

Andy

atm the website wont load :(
My tank is 22gal Uk

the ammonia wont be a problem as I have no fish...
Would chucking a load of ammonia work? just out of curiosity.

p.s how exactly does it start them

PM forum member PaulF. He is site owner I believe.

For 22 UK gallons, use 4 (four) doses, not 5. Thing is, don't UNDERdose the stuff. (It is however OK to overdose).

Would pouring in a load of ammonia kill snails? God knows... may be!
