Snail In My Tank!

Hi,

So I just came home, was looking at my fish closley (as you do when they're new) and thought I saw something moving. Then I realised it WAS moving...........yes it was a teeny teeny tiny SNAIL! I dont't get how it got in there coz I've had no new plants for over 2 weeks and they had anti-snail wotsit on them

I syphoned him up but am I niave to hope he's the only one? What problems/repercussions will this have?

P.s If it's relevant he was a dull colour with a black spot.

The snail probably hitched a ride on the plants, and the poison or whatever you put on it wasn't strong enough to kill them. The only real problems with snails is people just don't like see creepy crawlies in their tank, and it's possible they can get stuck in your filter parts. If you don't overfeed and regularly clean up your tank you shouldn't get too many of them.

If you don't like snails the best way to remove them is by hand as you see them or lure them onto a piece of vegetable then remove that.

I personally like the look of snails so I leave a few in my tank

Thanks. It did creep me out lol. I think I'm just gonna keep an eye out and get them out as and when I see them.

over feeding is one of the main causes of snail repo. Get an assain snail, they are ace!

Oh god do they look like little white speckles of sand? If they do there's quite a few, I wondered what they were! I thought it was just....well, white specks of sand.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of them?

I thought I was overfeeding the other day coz 2 of my Platys are a bit fat but I only feed them once a day and it's gone in like 2-3 mins.

Its surprising have fast they accumalate,i thought the same thing when i first found snails,but now i feed less and suck them out when i see them.

You'll get use to them after a while

they are the best algae eaters for tanks and are free. i really dont see why everyone has to kill them!

the problem with the last two options, is you then have to BUY the critters to eat the snails and then feed them when the pest snails are all gone. Assasains breed if you get more than one, so you get rid of one problem and are left with another!
plus, loaches take up some stocking room which you could use for something else.

pst snails are really useful to any tank as they turn the substrate over and clean everything.
if you do feel you are getting overrun (you shouldnt do, if you have a brain) feed less, and put a lump of cucumber in the tank just before lights out. then wait 1.5 hours and remove it, along with the snails on it!

Waaaaaaaa it's creepy!

I've just told the Platys off for not eating the eggs. They eat everything else!

Assasins do breed, Nick, but then you can sell them on. They arn't the cheapest of snail. They also look nice IMO. Its fun to watch them sucking the pest snails to death!
