i bought something very similar to this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Aquaview-One-Gallon-Aquarium-Kit-1-ct/10312983 for the girlfriend hoping to get her into the hobby and the fish kept dying and she no longer wants the tank soooooooo i'm going to use it for breeding purposes ( baby snails for my puffer / brine shrimp ) and was wondering what ideas people have for a diy filter of some kind i tried this one http://www.instructables.com/id/Easy-Aquarium-Sponge-Pump/ but it really didn't seem to do jack squat! so i'm open to pretty much anything

You could try the Toms Aquarium mini internal filters (it's a pretty good sponge filter)

There are a multitude of sponge and box filters that can be had cheap. I picked up 2 sponges at my last fish auction for about $2 total and I got 6 box filters sold as a group for $3. All of the ones I got would be larger than the filter in your picture as far as biological filtration was concerned. A box filter at the LFS is dirt cheap and a sponge is even cheaper, although a bit more than I spend for a used one at an auction. A sponge filter serves only to control nitrogen in the form of ammonia. It is not intended to remove much solids and has no chemical capacity. When I am using a sponge, it is usually because I have fry in a tank and don't want to lose them to high filter flows. The sponge will actually accumulate a thin layer of microscopic organisms, infusoria, that serve as a good first food for newborn egg layer fry.
