I'm looking for some slate to make some hidding caves and homes for my fish.
Is there anywhere were i can get some cheap slate to make them???

ALSO

What is safe to use to glue the slate together?

A few years back i used the slate tiles from my house (we had spare ones) i broke most of these into different shapes, stacking them ontop of each other. If you want to glue them together, use aquarium silicone, works well.

Builders or Reclaimation yards

There is an old slate quarry up my way, went there when I was younger to pick up some slate for my cichlid tank.
From wat I can remember, there is loads of the stuff, all different shapes and size that you could ever want for a tank....

Plan on heading back there soon to pick up some pieces for my background on my new tanks and to use as terrace in the gravel....

It's up near Perth if your interested.

Regards,

Z

take a trip to the lake district, in the past it was a popular place for holidaying Glaswegians :hyper: . tonnes of the slate of all kinds lying everywhere, and no restrictions on you taking bits. failing that go to your local building/garden centre, ask about off cuts and broken items, you may be surprised what you come up with. :good:

take a walk into them thar hills over yonder, just make sure you clean them properly

Perfect! ;)

You can go to a garden centre or a pond/koi shop, seen some there.

But I got mine from a very old disused quarry and also a lovely riverbed.

left the slate in a bucket of water for a few weeks and then gave them a good scrub to get any yuck off.

Look lovely now.

There is a criminal offence of theft for which in this country you can still be arrested, charged and put before the courts

Albeit a small bit of slate some of there farmers be very very upset at hordes of fishy folk descending on their dry stone walls to take home to build caves and barrier reef wot nots for their sicklid lakes

If police be called its still theft and involve a lot of explaining as to why and what

I realise that it may only be small amounts and not many of us would intentionally steal or damage property belonging to another but we need to be mindfull of not only the above legislation but also the Wildlife and Countryside Act and how some landowner/tenants/biodiversity managers may not choose to see things as we do :flowers:

having been brought up in Keswick, with farmers in the family, i would never dream of taking stones from a wall, nor did i suggest it. slate is everywhere, at the sides of the road and strewn along any path you care to walk. every building built, creates tonnes of the stuff, there are even old unused quarries, some shut for 100 years, with piles of it around. just a thought, where do you think farmers get the stone to repair their walls? they go out and collect it, not many of them own the land, most is owned, and leased to them, by the National Trust. if you are worried about protecting the countryside, i shouldn't be. the massed feet of the visitors, that make the area so prosperous, do more damage per year, than even a massed "slate robbery", by all the UK's fishkeepers.
I assumed common sense would be used, when collecting.
