Just bought a huge bit of bog wood for my tank, got it home and put it in thinking it would sink to the bottom however it floats! Is this being think (with it being the firdt time i have used it) or should it sink? Any ideas how I can get it to sink?

cool, so best to just leave it floating, i bought it from the LFS and they had it mark all as bog wood

No, there is a difference between bogwood and driftwood.

Driftwood floats.

bogwood, sinks straight away.

:S so do i tie it down, boil it, sink it, take it back and tell them its not bog wood but drift wood?

You could weigh it down, or you could leave it in a bucket and it will eventually sink.

yup soak it in a bucket, you'll probably wanna get the tannines out of it anyway (unless you want brown water in the tank.... won't harm the fish but isn't asthetically pleasing in all tanks, maybe in an appropriate biotope but thats a bit off the point!) so I'd advise soaking it in a bucket of water, changing the water every day until it's clear and it's sinking

Its already turned the water yellow...will this change over time or will it always be like this/...why do LFS not tell you this :(

depending on the bit of wood and what's in your filter it should clear. If you don't want it like that, take it out, soak it as I said above and put some caron in your filter which should clear it up. Hopefully in a week or two the tannine will all come out of the wood and it'l clear... saying that though I have a bit of bogwood that I've been soaking for 3 months now and it's still chucking it out, gonna sling it I think

the thing is, all the wood is different.

miss wiggles has her piece that soaked for 3 months and is still releasing tannins but i got 2 pieces for xmas that sank straight away and havent leached a drop (sorry miss wiggles lol).

its probably hard for them to tell what the woods like.

dont be disheartened tho!

if you really dont want to wait, try finding some mopani driftwood. seems alot better than normal bog/driftwood.

it looks like this.......

compared to the normal all dark brown wood i think you have.

got the short straw didn't I!! Think I'm gonna try and sell mine, if someone's doing a biotope and wants tannine stained water it'd be perfect and it's a lovely shape, seems such a shame to just throw it away
