carbon.......... if you put it in a tank with active carbon in the filter it should clear it. didn't for me but I think my wood shouldn't even come into it, it's just not normal

:-( My water turned brown when I added my wood! :D if you have already put it in your tank there actually is stuff you could buy to clear up your water. Don't know what it's called but you could ask someone at a fish store. I'd recommend putting it in a bucket tho tell the water isn't as strongly brown.

Something else you could try doing is boiling out the tannins. May not work in all instances, but it really cut out a lot of mine. As for it sinking, let it soak for a while in a bucket or something. When you put it in the tank, if it still floats some tie rock to it with fishing lline.

You can also silicon it to a piece of slate but obviously make sure its aquarium silicon and that youre happy with it orietation b4 you do. Id also 2nd the comment about mopani wood leaching less tannins than bogwood as Ive found the same. I boiled one piece of bog wood for about 12 hours then soaked it for 3weeks and it still leached tannins. £10 for a poxy piece of wood that I ended up throwing away  I must be mad.

i got some mopani and it said on the tag soak for 48 hours - the water was yellow! - but after well...a day and a half (i got impatient XD) i put it in my tank and the water didn't discolour atall!

i dont know what the difference between the woods are...but id reccoment mopani (my loaches love the natural 'caves' in the wood!

i left mine in the bath for a week with a brick on top took it out to shower but made sure all residues of soap ect had been well washed out
had to scrub this too with a scrubbing brush, tooth brush, bottle brush,
4 attempts before water would stay clean when scrubbing hard work but worth it
most of it i found to be in the loose surface layer of the wood
some years ago i put a piece straight in to a tank weighted down with plant weights (lead)
it leached a lot of tannins for quite a while
