simple way to clean gravel

We use a gravel vac much the same as the one you have discussed but ours runs off 2 c batteries. I bought it from "The Range" but I think they are available from Seapets as well. Works a treat esp. in my sons tank, he has only fake plants & several big fish doing what comes naturally. Think it was £10 ish.
