im in kind of a dilema.....i have started a community tank with some silver sharks that are about 2 1/2 inches long. my friend recently purchased a tank and it is going to be a cichlid tank i was quite impressed with them and was wondering would my silver sharks survive such a hostile terrain as i want to keep them

Silver sharks are Bala sharks. They grow to 35 cm ie bigger than your average school ruler . What size of tank ?

Then your tank is far too small for the sharks and only really big enough for a couple of types of cichlids. Have a look into shell dwellers / dwarf cichlids and return the shark.

what is the height and width?

Both the Balas and Cichlids (well MOST Cichlids) need the length swimming space. Regardless of the height / width a 12" Bala isn't going to be happy in a tank that 24" long.

If you have a friendly aquatic centre or other means of giving away large fish you could keep small sharks, they're not going to grow to 12" overnight?

No, they'll be stunted and die before they get anywhere near that size... :grr:
