Hi,

Im kind of new to the hobby of fish keeping and I have read around the forums and am experiencing major problems.

Ok, so I have calculated that I have about a 16litre tank.
I dechlorinated the water and added these salt thingys that my fish shop told me to add when setting it up.
The next day as I have realized I made a terrible mistake and bought fish.

I made sure my new Silver Dollar fishes were ok with the water, and I added them to the tank after allowing them to settle down with some of the water from the tank.
They immediately looked sick/stressed they were all on the bottom, nearly motionless.
After a couple of hours they started swimming around, but soon they returned back to a motionless state on the bottom of the tank.
I realise that i have too many Silver Dollar fishes, I have 6 in a 16litre tank. Too much right?

Well anyways, they are acting very strange, sometimes they spazz and swim everywhere and even dig into the sand/gravel on the bottom.
They dont seem to be eating, because they dont notice the floating food.
I have a filter with lights and an airpump. I dont think I need a heater cause I live in Singapore, where no fish tanks use heaters.

Today I bought Nitrite and Nitrate and Ammonia and pH indicators.
I found that, there are extremely low levels of Nitrite and Nitrate levels in the fish tank (at the moment) and there is less than 1 ppm of Ammonia, however the pH is about 8.
Does the pH greatly affect the fish? I researched and found out that Silver Dollar fish like 6-7.5 pH. So I am quite concerned.

My fish are really acting weird and they are motionless most of the time, but i can see they are still breathing... What can I do?
I am very worried.

Thanks for any replies :)

no silver dollers should be kept in a 16L as they grow too big, i would take them back to the shop and get smaller fish

In all honesty you couldn't keep one silver dollar in a tank that size . They are very skittish fish in my experience and once moved tank can take a few days to settle in if spooked they will dart about and then lay motionless sometime even lookin dead at times . I would return these immediatly to the LFS you purchased them from .Have a look here this will guide you through any questions you have on doing a fishless cycle .
