Silly Filter Question

My brand new aquaball filter has arrived today. I have never had a brand new filter before I usually get second hand stuff. Anyway I want to run it in one of my tanks along side a fluval 405 external. Normally i would add media from another filter, but I have no media that will fit! (this filter is round all my others are aquare). Should I just wash it in the tank water then put it in the tank or wash it leave it in the tank for a couple of days before switching it on?

you can just cut any sponge out your external to fit ive never see these paticular filters but it should be possible

lol I was hoping for a magic solution rather than cutting up my other media, oh well this should be fun!!
