Hi guys (and girls ;) )

Set up a new tank last week - a 180L corner tank, however having a bit of bother with the wood. I got a lovely big 'V' shaped piece of redmoor (I think), soaked it and whatnot and put it in the tank. A couple of days ago though there started to form a sort of almost clear, silky looking fungus thing all over it? It's almost like a spiders web in colour. I have no idea what this is or how to deal with it, so any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Thank you everyone,

~Claire~

Is it Mopani wood, then it is common for that to grow fungus a bit: take it out, scrub and put back in.

Ah maybe it is :) I will try that thanks. Will it grow back again though or it just a kindof first off thing of being in water? I've just always had pre-soaked wood before :p

It might grow back, or might not. It is less likely to if you keep plecos.

Ok. I don't have plecos because I have amazon swords and they haven't faired well in the past against them :p lol. Would ottos help?

I don't think otos much wood :) Which plecos did you try? I keep mine with Amazon swords, but the swords are only bothered if the plecs don't get enough food.

It was another member on here who had swords and had plecos and they damaged the leaves - sorry about my post, just realised it sounded as if I'd had them :) Need to put my brain in gear first!

I've heard that bulldog/rubberlip plecos are kinder on plants? Do you know if this is true or not?

with my mopani wood it did the fungs thing for about 2-3 weeks, then it went away and haven't had it come back. I also haven't read about it coming back because i was concerned the first time i saw the fungus on my mopani as well and looked into it. Hope that helps a bit

I have 2 planted tanks and 3 Bristlenoses, 1 Clown Plec and until recently a Gold Nugget and not one did a single bit of damage to a single leaf of any plant including swords, crypts, Java fern, mosses, E. tennelus, and many others!

Ok thanks everyone for the advice. I might look into getting a small plec as well even if it will go away, just to clean up any food the others miss :) Am I right in saying the clown plecos stay relatively small? Don't want anything that's going to get too big and start uprooting my foreground plants :/ lol
Cheers ;)

For your purposes Bristlenoses would be better IMO. Although Clowns are vegetarian they aren't algae eaters and will stay hidden 90% of the time.
