Hello all, Rob here, just taken delivery of my first tropical fish tank today, an Askoll pure M. I know it's not the biggest but space was a major factor here as well as looks!

Looking for advice on stocking with something colourful with character! Dwarf gourami's or cichlids?

Looking forward to spending some time on here and learning a lot!

Hi there!
welcomeani.gif
to the forum! I'm glad to see that there are more people who like fish. About the tank, dwarf gourami's actualy come in three varieties that i know of: orange with blue stripes, plain orange, or plain blue. From what I've read, cichlid are harder to take care of because of their varrying temperment

Welcome to the forum!!!! How big of a tank are you getting? Certain dwarf species can be sensitive if youd like to keep them i would suggest honey groumies, and they are NOT cycling fish so make sure your tank is completely cycled. Cichlids can be actually quite undemanding fish, you can go with dwarf speices, which need less room and are less aggressive, like german rams (can be sensitive to new tanks), apistogrammas and kribensis. Or you can do a larger tank with African cichlids which most go well with eachother when given enough room and hiding places. Theres also geophagus cichlids which need even larger tanks and are more on the peaceful side, i have a geophagus jurupari in my 75 gallon right now. And yea i think thats all i can add atm until you give me some more info haha, welcome again!

Thanks for the replies, it's a ten gallon so not too sure what I'll be able to get in there? It's cycling at the moment...

Well... a ten gallon cant have much sorry to say...  but

You can make a planted 10 gallon tank with a betta, maybe some snails and shrimp.

Im not very good at stocking 10 gallons sorry maybe someone with more knowledge of nano tanks can help you sorry.

Not a massive difference I know but imperial gallons

Welcome! Ten gallons would be a fantastic betta home! Even some wild species of betta. You would have to research but there are many nice smaller ones you can keep. Shrimp would work out well also.
