I have no problem with the UKAPS site. I am a member there as well. But when someone posted a link in their sig to ***** (a forum with only 14 members), it was removed due to its being a "competing" forum. I'd just like to know exactly what we are competing for...neither forum makes any money, correct?

Actually William has to pay money for his site, and it is not cheap at all. I think all the money that WIlliam has put in deserves the right to not allow any competing forum links, no matter the size...

I for one have never been told off for my sig and yes there are many that have a list of 7 tanks which is unneeded.

TFF are leniant for several reasons. Most of us use the other forums too and help provide knowledge within TFF.

If TFF were to say 'absolutely no links to competing forums' and classed it as any forum related to fish or aquatics then they would lose their knowledge base for the attitude shown. they would then be left (in the planted section) with the chaff quoting 'nutrients cause algae', 'phosphates are too high', '6WPG is needed for a glosso carpet' etc.

I assume they choose to allow these competing forums in order to retain people like Tom Barr and UKaps members for the benefit of TFF's knowledge base!!!

We link to Tom's site quite often and Tom returns the favour by coming on TFF occasionally and contributing with his undoubted knowledge in this area. We have UKaps banners in our sigs and return the favour by posting in TFF considerably. Its a 2 way thing. Someone putting a 20 line sig of their tanks is pointless. It can go in their profile like mine is.

I know for one I will be off if I have to retype and link everything I use in my replies etc.

Hi SuperColey1 :)

You are right. George Farmer, who was formerly a moderator at TFF, introduced the rest of us to that site. :D

You're missing the point Truck...I don't want anyone's links removed. I've actually used your sig to link to UKAPS several times.

it has already been said. :good:

here on TFF we occasionally link to uKaps for those questions we cannot answer about plants and likewise on uKaps (whey) we link back to tff for the pinned topics as they do contain alot of good info.

END OF IMO.

the more resources people have to solve their problems the better. i can say from experience i don't go to just one place to get my questions answered. topics and subjects can get lost in a site this big. having smaller sites to go too can assure your question is answered. i am not saying remove all links, consistency should be available. you need to have options and being able to use multiple sites. blocking off one avenue of knowledge from others is hypercritical and communistic.

i dont see how any forum (whether it be a general forum or a specialist forum) can compete with this one due to it's size - it has over 40,000 members and i doubt all of them will leave (alright i know everyone doesnt post but it is still a large majority!). If people like the community here they will stay.

This has gotten way off topic from a question about signatures to linking to other sites however, I will add this concerning other sites though since ithe thread has gone in that direction. Aploogies to you truckasaurus123.

Simply putting a link to another site in your signature is not in itself helping someone answer a question. They would have to go there, create an ID, post a question and wait for an answer. Something they could simply do here without going through the hassle of joining somewhere else. Links placed in post directing someone to the answer to their question have in a lot of cases have been allowed, especially in certain sections.

Our marine section, while quite active, is still developing and in the past, Great Lakes, Steelhealr and other mods in that section have been lenient and allowed links to other forums because the amount of information on this site was still small compared to the vast marine aquatic hobby. Some questions couldn't be answered with a simple search of the forum. On the other hand, in the FW sections, the answers to almost all questions can be found with a simple search of the forum.

The key that we try to use in whether to allow a link is whether the article or thread linked is pertinent to the topic AND is it information that can't be found elsewhere. In most cases, the first one is true but usually, the second isn't. And a link in a signature fails on both accounts.
